Subject: Modification to Minor and Moderate Flood Categories for
the St. Mary County Tidal Gauge on St. George Creek at Straits
Point (SGSM2)

Effective at 1200 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) (8:00 AM EDT) on 13 June 2024, the
National Weather Service will modify the minor and moderate flood stages
for SGSM2.

The new flood categories will be as follows:

1. The major flood stage at this tidal gauge will remain
unchanged at 5.0 feet above Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW).

2. The new moderate flood stage is 4.0 feet above MLLW. The
previous moderate flood stage was 3.5 feet above MLLW.

3. The new minor flood stage is 3.5 feet above MLLW. The previous
minor flood stage was 3.0 feet above MLLW.

Therefore, starting at 1200 UTC (8:00 AM EDT) on 13 June 2024,
Coastal Flood Advisories will reference the new minor flood
category level and Coastal Flood Warnings will reference the new
moderate flood category. This change is part of a re-evaluation of
tidal flood stages with local emergency managers to reflect
current flood impacts.
