..Douglas and Pottawatamie County Downbursts...

Estimated Peak Wind: 100 mph
Fatalities: 0
Injuries: 0

Start Date: 06/25/2024
Start Time: 09:30 PM CDT

Survey Summary:
A series of downbursts within a thunderstorm began to produce
significant ground-level winds near I-680 and HWY 133, progressing
rapidly to the east southeast, uprooting trees and downing
powerlines at many locations. Portions of Pershing, Birdsley, and
Dogwood roads had to be temporarily closed due to downed trees and
powerlines. It was reported that more than 30,000 were without
power at one point. Numerous large trees were broken in Oakland,
some landing on homes. The ASOS at Omaha Eppley Airport recorded a
90 mph wind gust, and damage was consistent with 80 to 100 mph
wind gusts. It is also interesting to note that while radar wind
signatures were strong farther to the north and west of this axis
of most intense winds, there were numerous reports of 40 to 55 mph
gusts. It was not until one of these more intense downbursts was
able to bring the greatest winds down to ground level that the
more widespread damage began to occur.
