Compared to the 1991-2020 U.S. Climate Normals, it was a very warm and dry summer across the vast majority of the NWS Charleston forecast area, with the summer season encapsulating the period of June 1st through August 31st. Mean temperatures for the 2024 summer season were generally 1 to 3 degrees above normal, with some locations trending closer to normal. This translated into five official NWS Charleston climate locations making the top 10 in terms of their warmest mean summer temperatures on record. In terms of total precipitation, widespread departures were noted across the NWS Charleston forecast area, with many locations ending the summer season with departures of 3 to 6 inches, even higher in isolated locations. This translated into three official NWS Charleston climate locations making the top 10 in terms of their driest summers on record. Please see the following two paragraphs for a breakdown on the specific top 10s that were set at official NWS Charleston climate locations for the summer season, both in terms of mean temperatures and total precipitation. Mean temperatures are in degrees Fahrenheit, with total precipitation in inches. Elkins, WV had its third warmest summer on record with a mean temperature of 71.5. Huntington, WV had its fifth warmest summer on record with a mean temperature of 77.6, while Clarksburg, WV tied 2018 for its 5th warmest summer on record with a mean temperature of 74.2. Charleston, WV had its 7th warmest summer on record with a mean temperature of 76.6. Finally, Beckley, WV tied 1943 for its 8th warmest summer on record with a mean temperature of 71.6. Beckley, WV had its 5th driest summer on record, receiving 7.79 inches of precipitation throughout the summer. Elkins, WV had its 7th driest summer on record, receiving 9.29 inches of precipitation throughout the summer. Finally, Clarksburg, WV had its 8th driest summer on record, receiving 7.69 inches of precipitation throughout the summer. $$ GW
