From: Ketzel Levens Co-Hydrology Program Manager NWS Duluth Minnesota SUBJECT: NEW FORECAST SERVICES FOR THE KNIFE RIVER NEAR TWO HARBORS EFFECTIVE July 9, 2024 the National Weather Service Forecast Office, in Duluth in cooperation with the North Central River Forecast Center, is introducing a new river flood forecast point on the Knife River in Minnesota. The forecast point will be for an existing river gauge on the Knife River and is part of NWS Duluths hydrologic services for the Western Lake Superior basin. Public stakeholders as well as County, State, Federal partners have expressed interest in expanded services in the basin. NWSDLH Hydrologic Services will begin July 9, 2024 for the point listed below. Flood forecast services may begin sooner if conditions warrant. Knife River near Two Harbors, MN (NWSLI KNIM5) - Flood Warning (MSPFLWDLH) - Flood Statement (MSPFLSDLH) - Flood Advisory (MSPFLSDLH) - Flood Watch (MSPFFADLH) - Hydrologic Statement (MSPRVSDLH) - NWPS Probabilistic Outlook (MSPESFDLH) - National and Local NWPS webpages Forecast and warning information is available from the NOAA/NWS Duluth web page at weather.gov/duluth as well as the NOAA/NWS National Water Prediction Service (NWPS) web page at water.noaa.gov. The NWS defines Flood Stage as the river level at which impacts to life and/or property begin. On the Knife River the minor flood stage is 33.0 ft, moderate flood stage 34.0 ft, and major flood stage is 36.0 ft. Forecasts will be issued when projected stages reach an action stage of 30.0 ft. During recent flood events in September of 2023 the gauge reached a level of 34.89 ft resulting in inundation of river-side recreation trails and low lying areas of riverside residential properties. During major flood stage (gauge height 36 feet or greater), water goes over the Church Road (County Road 102) bridge.
