Rating: EF-1 Estimated Peak Wind: 100-105 mph Path Length /statute/: 2.0 miles Path Width /maximum/: 300 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 05/26/2024 Start Time: 06:14 PM EDT Start Location: 1 SW Salem City / City of Salem / VA Start Lat/Lon: 37.2728 / -80.0698 End Date: 05/26/2024 End Time: 06:17 PM EDT End Location: 2 SE Salem City / City of Salem / VA End Lat/Lon: 37.2738 / -80.0344 Survey Summary: The tornado touched down near the intersection of Karen Drive and Joan Circle, where tree trunks were snapped. Additional trees were snapped and uprooted as the tornado moved east-northeastward, with loss of roofing material noted at several homes and apartment buildings just south of the Roanoke River. The tornado lifted just east of Electric Road near the intersection of Midland and Easton Roads. The National Weather Service would like to thank Emergency Management officials with the City of Salem and the Virginia Dept of Emergency Management for their assistance with the damage survey this morning. && EF Scale: The Enhanced Fujita Scale classifies tornadoes into the following categories: EF0.....65 to 85 mph EF1.....86 to 110 mph EF2.....111 to 135 mph EF3.....136 to 165 mph EF4.....166 to 200 mph EF5.....>200 mph NOTE: The information in this statement is preliminary and subject to change pending final review of the event and publication in NWS Storm Data. $$
