Weather Summary for Iowa
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
420 AM CDT Mon Jun 24 2024

Today:

A few thunderstorms have popped up over Iowa overnight. Skies are
partly cloudy, winds are light and variable at less than 10 mph, and
temperatures are hovering in the upper 60s to lower 70s in most areas.

The early morning isolated storms will dissipate after sunrise,
yielding to a mostly sunny, hot and humid day. Winds will come around
to south and increase to 10 to 20 mph by the afternoon, and
temperatures will climb into the mid 80s in the northeast but upper
90s southwest. Combined with high humidity, this will result in Heat
Index values in excess of 100 degrees across most of the western half
of Iowa, where Heat Advisories are in effect.

Tonight and beyond:

Thunderstorm chances will increase from this evening through tonight,
when there will be a severe weather risk primarily in the form of
damaging winds. Tuesday will be hot and humid once again, with Heat
Index values topping 100 degrees across southern Iowa. Another round
of thunderstorms is then forecast Tuesday afternoon and evening, when
all modes of severe weather will be possible. Wednesday will provide a
brief respite with dry conditions and high temperatures in the upper
70s to mid 80s, but then additional thunderstorm chances are forecast
at times between Thursday and Saturday. Daily high temperatures will
remain in the upper 70s to 80s during the latter part of the week and
next weekend.
