...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 1960, devastating Category 4 Hurricane Donna went on
a furious jaunt through the Florida Keys with maximum
sustained winds around 140 mph. While crossing the
Atlantic, she briefly reached Category 5 status with
sustained winds around 160 mph. During a 13 day span
from September 1st to the 13th, she became the only
hurricane on record to strike Florida, the Mid Atlantic
Coast, and New England. She also set a record for major
hurricane status by maintaining a Category 3 rating or
greater for 9 days. Most areas from the North Carolina
Coast to Long Island were battered by sustained 111 to
130 mph winds, a Category 3 rating. In the United States
Donna caused $387 million damage, killed 50 people, and
injured around 1,800. Adjusting for inflation, the
damage cost equates to about $3.37 billion dollars today.
