In 1995, severe thunderstorms struck Hodgeman County
Kansas where 80 mph gusts snapped several power poles in
half 11 miles north of Jetmore. In 1961, Category 5
Hurricane Carla battered the Central Texas Coast with
sustained winds that reached around 175 MPH. Some areas
were overwhelmed by around 16 inches of rain. In
addition, Carla spawned the most powerful
hurricane-related tornado on record when a vicious F4
tornado swept across Galveston Island. The twister
killed 8 and injured 55. The winds inside the vortex
were nearly 50% more powerful than Carla`s were at peak
intensity. Carla spawned 18 tornadoes, of which 10
struck Louisiana and 8 struck Texas. In all, Carla
killed 45 and caused around $300 million damage.
Adjusting for inflation, the damage cost of Carla equates
to about $3.59 billion dollars today. Carla ranks as the
10th most intense hurricane to ever strike the mainland
United States.
