...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 1989, Hurricane Hugo struck the Virgin Islands when a
97 mph gust was measured at Saint Croix. Passing
directly over Saint Croix, Hugo caused complete
devastation of the island, produced a 5 to 7 foot storm
surge, and essentially severed all communications with
the outside world. Three people were killed and around
$500 million damage resulted. The only rain gauge still
in operation measured 9.40 inches in 24 hours at Caneel
Bay. In 1947, a category 4 hurricane roared into Fort
Lauderdale with 155 mph gusts. Two days later on the
19th, this hurricane would devastate New Orleans where it
killed 51 and caused $110 million damage. The eye passed
directly over the Crescent City where the barometric
pressure dropped to 28.61 inches.
