In 1960, devastating Category 4 Hurricane Donna went on a furious jaunt through the Florida Keys with maximum sustained winds around 140 mph. While crossing the Atlantic, she briefly reached Category 5 status with sustained winds around 160 mph. During a 13 day span from September 1st to the 13th, she became the only hurricane on record to strike Florida, the Mid Atlantic Coast, and New England. She also set a record for major hurricane status by maintaining a Category 3 rating or greater for 9 days. Most areas from the North Carolina Coast to Long Island were battered by sustained 111 to 130 mph winds, a Category 3 rating. In the United States Donna caused $387 million damage, killed 50 people, and injured around 1,800. Adjusting for inflation, the damage cost equates to about $3.37 billion dollars today. $$ Auto
