In 2015, severe thunderstorms raked the Northeastern
United States with 70 to 80 mph winds and hail that
reached 4 inches in diameter. The 4 inch diameter hail
landed just north of Baltimore, although extremely
powerful winds caused the greatest damage. Widespread
tree and power line damage occurred across South and
Southeast Pennsylvania Maryland and New Jersey where
Amtrak service was greatly disrupted. Around 500,000
people lost power in Philadelphia where a 71-mph gust was
measured at Philadelphia International. In 1902, Volcano
Springs California lived up to its name when the
temperature reached a toasty 129 degrees to set a June
record for the United States.
