In 1965, late night severe thunderstorms associated with a strong cold front produced 100 mph straight line winds in the Chicago area and Northwest Indiana. Three nights later, on August 29th, the temperature at Midway Airport in Chicago plunged to 43 degrees. This established the coldest temperature ever recorded at Midway Airport in the month of August. && In 1883, the Indonesian volcano, Krakatoa, began a series of eruptions that would lead to the most powerful catastrophic eruption in recorded history. The initial eruptions on the 26th were powerful but were not considered out of the ordinary to the local residence of nearby islands. Unfortunately, during the night, these eruptions became more powerful and the following day, Krakatoa exploded with 13,000 times the power of the Hiroshima bomb in 1945. This incredibly powerful explosion completely obliterated approximately 26 square miles of the island sending ash 260,000 feet in to the air. The shock waves from the explosion were heard, literally, around the world. Aneroid barometers in Boston Massachusetts and London England registered the explosions shock wave which circled the earth seven times. An estimated 36,000 people perished in the eruption, some were as a far away as Africa. Over the next five years following the eruptions, world temperatures averaged 1.2 degrees Fahrenheit colder due to the volcanic ash blocking sunlight. $$ Auto
