831 FXUS65 KLKN 271001 AFDLKN Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 301 AM PDT Thu Jun 27 2024 .SYNOPSIS...Isolated showers and thunderstorms expected to taper off as the system moves east, however chances for more storms remain for White Pine County. Dry weather sets back in with temperatures expected to be cooler today, then increasing again over the weekend, followed by another weather pattern with cooler temperatures and chances for more showers and thunderstorms early next week. && .SHORT TERM...Thursday through Friday Thursday, isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected to dissipate and head east out of the state with drier weather conditions settling in behind, however chances (5-20%) for storms remain for White Pine County through the afternoon. Cooler temperatures settle in Thursday as the cold front from an upper low moves over northern Nevada, leaving high temperatures in the 70s to 80s (80s to 90s for central Nevada). Low temperatures expected to be in the 40s for northern Nevada and 60s for central Nevada. Southeastern Elko County, including the city of West Wendover is expected to get some relief overnight Thursday as low temperatures are to be in the 60s. Fire weather conditions are expected to elevate as RH values are expected to drop between 10-20% this afternoon all zones along with elevated winds expected in the afternoon at 15-20 mph with gusts as high as 25 mph. RH values for all other zones Friday, near zonal flow is expected to be dominant over the state which will bring in drier weather conditions, however temperatures are expected to slightly increase yet remain in the 70s to 80s (80s to 90s for central Nevada). Overnight lows will have a bigger increase with lows in the 50s to 60s compared to previous night. RH values are expected to drop between the single digits and 17% across all zones however winds are not expected to elevate much with speeds staying relatively below 10 mph with the exception of mountain tops at 10-15 mph in the afternoon. .LONG TERM...Saturday through next Thursday Dry conditions and hotter temperatures with highs in the 90s return Saturday across the Great Basin region as south-southwest winds increase ahead of an upper-level trough. The trough is still expected to traverse the area Sunday bringing showers and thunderstorms with limited rainfall to far northern Nevada near the Idaho border Sunday afternoon. Slightly cooler temperatures are expected early next week int he wake of the trough and weak cold front with highs across northern Nevada in the 80s through Tuesday. Forecast confidence for dry conditions and hot temperatures is high going into the end of next week as high pressure dominates keeping moisture out of the region. Expect highs in the 90s and lows in the 50s and 60s. Winds will be out of the west-northwest each day with probabilities of wind gusts of 30 mph or greater less than 30% in valleys. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions expected for the next 24 hours at all terminals. Cumulus build-ups will develop Thursday afternoon and evening in portions of central and northern NV. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible across White Pine County, including KELY. Gusty outflow winds and lightning will be the primary threats starting after 19Z. Breezy winds from the W-NW expected to affect all TAF sites during the afternoon, increasing to 10-15 knots with gusts to 20-25 knots. && .FIRE WEATHER...Isolated showers and thunderstorms expected to dissipate early this morning for eastern Nevada. Chances for more isolated thunderstorms expected during the day for zone 425. Elevated fire weather conditions as RH values drop below 15% for all zones (with the exception of zone 469, 470 and most of 425 staying above 15%) and elevated winds reaching 15-20 mph, gusts 25 mph, however does not meet red flag warning criteria. && .LKN Watches/Warnings/Advisories...
