Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
140 PM PDT Tue Jun 18 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Another cold, but not quite as cold, night is expected
tonight with lows dropping into the 30s with areas of frost
developing. Quiet weather with warming temperatures are expected
through the rest of the week with some cloud cover each day
through Friday with relatively cloud free skies through the
weekend.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Wednesday night

Benign, cool conditions are expected this evening with another
cold night in store for many valleys across the area with lows
dropping into the mid 30s to lower 30s mainly across Elko county,
White Pine county and southern Lander/Eureka Counties.
Temperatures continue an upward trajectory Wednesday with highs
reaching into the 70s to lower 80s in some valleys farther west
and south. An afternoon breeze from the south will develop across
central Nevada of around 15 mph but lighter winds expected
elsewhere. Frost threat Wednesday night will be absent with lows
climbing back up into the 40s area wide.

.LONG TERM...Thursday through Tuesday

A trough axis just west of the Great Basin region will provide for
a few mid and upper-level clouds Thursday and Friday. However, the
overall dry southwest flow aloft will prevent any significant moisture
intrusion from the tropical disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico
into eastern Nevada on the western periphery of an expanding
ridge of high pressure across the eastern U.S. Overall pattern
will support warming temperatures back to above normal levels by
the weekend with highs in the 90s with some upper 90s. Conditions
will be quite dry near the surface with single digit RH values
each afternoon but relatively light winds through at least
Saturday before slightly higher west winds develop early next
week.

&&

.AVIATION...VFR conditions and light winds, less than 10 knots
sustained, are expected at all TAF sites through Wednesday.
A few mid-level clouds across northern Nevada will dissipate this
evening.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...Benign fire weather conditions are expected
through tonight with light winds and mild temperatures. However, a
very dry air mass is now in place across central and northern
Nevada with daytime relative humidity falling into the single
digits by Wednesday afternoon. A afternoon breeze from the south
will develop in higher terrain across central Nevada Wednesday
but will remain well below thresholds. A steady warming trend will
occur through the weekend with above normal high temperatures in
the 90s returning by Friday across most valleys. Some cloud cover
is expected Wednesday through Friday across the state but shower
and thunderstorm activity will remain east Nevada through the
weekend.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...Cold temperatures this morning have mitigated high
elevation snowmelt in the near term along faster responding
mountain streams such as Lamoille Creek. The mainstem Humboldt
River near Comus will continue with elevated flows for the next
several days but minor flood stage is not expected to be reached.
Dry conditions are expected this week with a warming trend
beginning Tuesday.

The Humboldt River near Battle Mountain continues to recede and
has fallen below action stage. Further flow declines are expected
through the rest of the week.

The Humboldt River at Comus is expected to continue to rise
through midweek but remain in action stage before a declining
trend starts late this week.

Wildhorse Reservoir remains elevated and will remain in action
stage for the next several days.
