Area Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
Early morning satellite imagery shows high clouds circling around
Idaho in a broad anticyclonic pattern as high pressure continues
to move over the area. This will bring warming temperatures over
the next couple of days. Mid to upper 70s are expected today in
the valleys with maybe a few spots getting into the lower 80s. 80s
will be more commonplace by Wednesday however, with mid 80s
expected in the valleys and some upper 80s aren`t out of the
question. Quite warm late September. With strong high pressure
overhead today, clouds will be hard to come by and winds will be
very light. The high will shift east on Wednesday and the upper
flow will become more southwesterly. The pressure gradient will
tighten between the ridge to our east and a trough moving into the
Pac NW during the afternoon Wednesday so winds will become a
touch breezy but nothing impactful, just noticeable, in the 10-15
mph range with higher gusts.

The upper level jet will remain positioned well to our north for
the rest of the work week and into the weekend keeping the region
void of any impactful weather. Does look like an area of high
pressure well to our south will strengthen and H5 heights will
increase ever so slightly over eastern Idaho which should nudge
temperatures up a few degrees each day into the weekend with 80s
again becoming commonplace in the lower valleys, perhaps lingering
into the first few days of October. So much for it being fall,
right? Expect things to remain dry for the remainder of September
as the current forecast is once again void of any PoPs regionwide
over the week ahead. McKaughan

.AVIATION...
High pressure shifting over the region today will keep winds very
light and skies essentially clear. That being said, VFR will
prevail through the period. McKaughan

.FIRE WEATHER...
The western states upper level ridge axis moves directly over the
Gem State today, and shift quickly to the east by early this
evening. With a shift to southerly flow, look for moderate to
large increases in both high and low temperatures until a trough
comes in Wed night. This trough continues to look very dry with
little precipitation making it south of the Idaho-Montana state
line. An increase in wind should occur ahead of and behind the
associated surface cold front. There appears to be even very
little cloud this far south of this cold front. It appears as
though only a few locations will even approach gusts to 25 mph
during this event, thus do not foresee any Red Flag products at
this time. Humidity should be at least falling into the teens,
with perhaps some very low elevations dropping below the 15
percent threshold. This front does not do too much cooling as
temperatures at Snake River plain elevations still stay in the 80s
through the week. The Wed night/Thu event is as close to
precipitation as the forecast area gets; nothing expected to the
beginning of next month. Messick
