Slight cooling is expected this weekend before slow warming develops on Monday. Extensive night and morning low clouds will cover the coast and valleys each day, with low clouds persisting at the coast into the afternoons. Gusty onshore winds will occur this afternoon and Sunday afternoon over the mountains and deserts. && .DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE... SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES... At 1 PM, skies have cleared over the Inland Empire and San Diego County Valleys, but remain at the coast and over inland Orange County. Some sunshine may be able to peek through the clouds this afternoon, but full clearing is not expected at the coast. Temperatures are running 2-5 degrees lower than Friday afternoon across inland areas and are a degree or two above at the coast. Highs will remain slightly above normal along the desert slopes into the deserts, but will run 2-8 degrees below normal across the coast and valleys. A 588 DM low is weakening over the Gulf of California today and a shortwave is approaching Southern California from the west. The shortwave will enhance onshore flow today and tomorrow, with the strongest winds of 35-55 mph along the desert slopes in the afternoons. Temperatures will fall a few degrees for tomorrow, with highs reaching the upper-60s to low-70s across the coast and western valleys, the upper-70s to low-80s in the Inland Empire, the 70s in the mountains, near 90 in the High Desert and the low-100s in the lower deserts. The shortwave strengthens and detaches from the mean flow early next week and parks off the coast of northern Baja California for the following several days. The most noticeable impacts from the low will be the increasing high clouds across the region, and will also help maintain extensive night and morning low clouds across the coast and valleys. Small changes in the depth of the marine layer will occur each day, impacting how far inland the clouds will progress and the amount of time it will take to clear each day. Ridging to the north will support slow warming on Monday and Tuesday, with little day-to-day changes in the temperature for Wednesday through Friday. && .AVIATION... 081930Z...Coast/Valleys...Low clouds with bases 1200-2000 ft MSL and tops to 2500 ft MSL linger along and near the coast this afternoon, with most locations within 5 miles of the coast expected to remain BKN/OVC through this afternoon.
