Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV

.SYNOPSIS...Above normal temperatures and southwest breezes
will continue into early next week. Monsoon moisture may make a
return into eastern Mohave County for a slight chance of
thunderstorms Sunday onward. Dangerous heat builds over the region
middle to late next week.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Through Saturday night.

Trough axis along the northwest coast and broad ridge positioned to
our southeast will place the southern Great Basin and Mojave Desert
under a dry southwest flow today and Saturday. Highs will stay some 4
to 8 degrees above normal while southwest gusts top out between 20
and 30 mph. Final note, highest concentration of smoke and haze from
the Fresno County wildfires will continue to impact primarily the
southern Sierra and Owens Valley.

.LONG TERM...Sunday through July 4th.

Monsoonal moisture will begin to rebuild across Arizona as a large
subtropical high pressure ridge builds across the southern US. This
will result in an increase in thunderstorm coverage mainly in Mohave
County starting Sunday and persisting into midweek. A southwesterly
flow aloft will persist for locations west of the Colorado River and
will limit the westward extent of thunderstorm chances, with dry and
hot conditions being the rule across most of the Mojave Desert and
southern Great Basin.

By midweek, a large high pressure center will build along the West
Coast, turning the flow aloft more north or northwesterly. This
should focus any lingering monsoonal moisture further east, while
rising heights will result in an expansion of and intensification of
the heat. Wednesday onward, high heat risk is advertised across most
of the Western Mojave Desert and may eventually lead to heat
headlines as confidence increases in the coming days.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Breezy southwesterly winds will
continue into the morning hours with occasional 15 to 20 knot wind
gusts. Winds will continue to maintain their southwesterly
direction, but will begin increasing in magnitude throughout the
morning and afternoon with wind gusts around 25 knots expected this
afternoon. Wind gusts will continue into the evening hours before
eventually dropping off.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...KHND and KVGT will see southwesterly winds increase
throughout the morning into the afternoon, with 15 to 25 knot wind
gusts expected during the afternoon and evening hours. Winds at KBIH
remain relatively light, 10 to 12 knots or less, and will follow
typical diurnal directional trends with light and variable winds
this morning before they settle in from the southeast. KDAG will
favor a westerly direction with 20 to 30 knot wind gusts dropping
off during the early morning hours and returning around mid-
afternoon. The Colorado River Valley TAF sites will see breezy
southerly winds increase with 20 knot wind gusts picking up later
this morning and continuing through the afternoon.
