Young, Chief NWS Digital and Graphical Information Support Branch Subject: Two New NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards (NWR) Transmitters in the Texas Panhandle become operational: Effective on or about October 1, 2024 Effective on or about October 1, 2024, NWR service will begin from a new transmitter, Station WWQ50, located near Dalhart, Texas and operating on a frequency of 162.425 Megahertz. In addition, a second, new transmitter, station WWQ51, located in Stratford, Texas and operating on a frequency of 162.525 Megahertz, will begin service.Both transmitters are operated by the Amarillo, Texas Weather Forecast Office (WFO). The transmitters will begin 24-hour broadcasts of weather forecasts and weather warnings to better serve the residents of the northwest Texas Panhandle, the Oklahoma Panhandle and northeastern New Mexico. Some of these areas previously had limited to no NWR reception. Emergency Alert System (EAS) participants currently monitoring other NWR transmitters for weather warnings should check to determine if the new transmitters provide better reception. NWR listeners using receivers equipped with Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) will want to program in the appropriate SAME location code to receive automated notifications for weather warnings.
