Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Boise ID
216 PM MDT Sun Jun 23 2024

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Tuesday night... Southwesterly
flow will continue today, bringing warm dry air from the
southwest into the region. Winds will pick up as a cold front
passes over Washington-Northern Idaho later today. Westerly
winds will begin to pick up by the late afternoon across much of
the region, with sustained speeds being anywhere from 10-25 mph
and gusts reaching near 35 mph. Wind speeds might be slightly
higher over 5000 feet and on mountain ridges.

Above normal temperatures will continue, with Mountain Home, ID
and Rome, OR already reaching 90F as of noon MDT. Most
locations in the Snake River Valley have at least a 30% chance
of reaching 100F by this evening, with peak heating occurring
from 4-7pm across much of the area. Temperatures will cool
slightly on Monday ahead of another weak ridge building in on
Tuesday-Wednesday. Temperatures will fluctuate through the
short term to being about 10-20 degrees above normal.

Fires in the Owyhee Mountains and near Twin Falls will
contribute some patchy smoke and haze this afternoon and
evening, especially near Mountain Home, ID and near Silver City,
ID.

.LONG TERM...Wednesday through Sunday...A trough will begin to move
into the Pacific Northwest on Wednesday, bringing cooler air by
the evening along with a chance (15-30% chance) of showers and
thunderstorms near the NV border and in high terrain across the
region early on Wednesday afternoon. Temperatures will dip back
down to near normal on Thursday-Friday. Models remain in good
agreement about the location of the advancing trough on
Thursday. The best chance for precipitation (10-20% chance)
looks to remain over the West Central Mountains from Thursday-
Friday. Strong winds and low moisture Wednesday into Thursday
could lead to fire weather concerns, especially in lower
elevations. The trough will push out late Friday, with zonal
flow likely taking over and elevating temperatures back up above
normal.
