...NWS Damage Survey for Tuesday, June 25, 2024 Western Sandhills
Tornado Event...

.Update...Below is the damage survey of the tornado that moved
across portions of Grant, Hooker, and McPherson Counties on the
evening of Tuesday, June 25, 2024. This summary includes the
addition of nearly 25 miles to the path length that was
determined from the day two survey of Hooker and McPherson
Counties.

.Overview...On Tuesday, June 25, 2024, a supercell developed over
far western Cherry County and moved southeast through the evening
before dissipating south of Interstate 80 in Lincoln County. The
supercell produced a long-track tornado that was confined to
portions of Grant, Hooker, and McPherson Counties. NWS North
Platte classified the tornado as long-track due to the tornado
remaining on the ground for nearly 40 miles over a period of
nearly an hour. The tornado may have intermittently lifted over
west central McPherson County before finally dissipating near
Highway 92.

Management, first responders, and residents of Grant, Hooker, and
McPherson Counties for their invaluable help in conducting this
survey.

Survey Summary:

A supercell thunderstorm developed over far western Cherry County
during the mid-evening hours of Tuesday, June 25, 2024. The
supercell rapidly strengthened and produced very large hail as it
dropped to the south southeast into Grant County producing a
tornado. The tornado damaged trees in and east of the community of
Whitman before continuing south and rapidly intensifying. A
primary home on a farmstead just south of Whitman was severely
damaged and another was destroyed. Several other outbuildings were
destroyed with additional loss of vehicles and farm equipment.
One person was injured. The tornado continued to the south
southeast through Grant County and into far southwest Hooker
County where additional farm equipment was damaged. The tornado
impacted a second farmstead, however damage to the property was
mainly confined to power poles, outbuildings, and trees. An
unoccupied home took minor damage. The tornado continued to the
south southeast into Mcpherson County causing additional damage to
electrical transmission lines, trees, and property fencing. The
tornado dissipated near Highway 92 in west central McPherson
County.
