Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
117 PM PDT Fri Jun 28 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Quiet and dry conditions continue through tomorrow
with winds picking up Saturday afternoon. Elevated fire weather
condtions will exist across central Nevada. Temperatures will
remain in the upper 80s to mid 90s with active weather returning
to northern Nevada Sunday.

&&

.SHORT TERM...This afternoon through Saturday evening.

Current satellite shows clear condtions across nearly all of the
state, with a few clouds across Northeastern Nevada. Dry and
quiet weather remains through Saturday. Light and variable winds
will remain in place through this evening with highs in the mid to
upper 80s, and lows in the upper 40s to 50s. Hazy skies may exist
across areas of Northwest Nye county later this afternoon and
evening, as smoke and hazy from a wildfire located in zone 429 in
southwest Mineral county is expected to advect into the area with
wind shifts.

Saturday, hazy skies may get into southern portions of Lander and
Eureka counties as well as northwestern Nye county due to
southerly flow. A trough over the Pacific Northwest will
strengthen and deepen. Strong southwesterly flow will result as
much of the Silver State remains out ahead of the system.
Afternoon southwesterly winds of 20-25 mph with gusts up to 30
mph in the afternoon will not only drive temperatures up into the
mid 90s for many. With these warm temperatures, strong winds,
minimum relative humidity percentages will drop into the 8-15%
range across the state. This will lead to elevated fire weather
conditions across 427, 426, and 425 across central Nevada. Lows
Saturday night are forecasted to fall into the 40s and 50s.

.LONG TERM...Sunday through next Friday

A quick moving upper-level trough will bring a few showers and
thunderstorms to the northern border of the state Sunday
afternoon. Chances for wetting rains of 0.10" or remain slim,
less than 5% so any thunderstorms that do develop are likely to be
dry. Elevated but not critical fire weather conditions with low
relative humidity and gusty winds are expected across portions of
central Nevada Saturday afternoon and Sunday and Monday across
mainly eastern Nevada. Higher probabilities above 50% of wind
gusts of 30 mph are expected to remain along mountain ranges,
particularly in White Pine county. However, recent widespread
wetting rains over White Pine County has mitigated drying of fuels
in fire weather zone 425. Dry conditions and lighter winds are
expected Monday onward with a strong high pressure system building
over central California by the end of next week.

&&

.AVIATION...VFR conditions expected for the next 24 hours at all
terminals. Light haze from a few regional wildfires is expected
through tomorrow but will not introduce VIS restrictions at any
TAF sites. Winds will be light with an afternoon gust near 20
knots at KELY. Winds are expected to increase from the south and
southwest with the highest winds across central Nevada affecting
KTPH and KELY with speeds in the 15 knots range with gusts
approaching 25 knots. A few high, cirrus clouds will stream over
the state Saturday with otherwise sunny skies.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...Dry and generally fair weather continues this
afternoon and evening Warmer temperatures Saturday with increased
breezes across the forecast area, with gusts up to 30 mph. Paired
with minimum afternoon RH values near or less than 15%, produce
elevated fire weather conditions for Saturday afternoon across
427, 426 and 425. Dry thunderstorms expected along the Idaho and
Oregon borders (northern half of zones 437, 438, 469, and 470)
Sunday in response to an upper wave and modest surface boundary
moving thru from the west/northwest. Afternoon wind gusts around
25 mph can again be expected Sunday across the forecast area.
