Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT
234 PM MDT Wed Sep 25 2024

.SYNOPSIS...High pressure will bring above normal temperatures,
relatively light winds, and very low precipitation chances to the
Great Basin through at least the next week.

&&

.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z/6AM Friday)...Mid level ridging is
centered along the central/southern Rockies this afternoon, with
southerly flow upstream across the Great Basin/Colorado Plateau
region. This has allowed a very warm airmass to overspread the
forecast area, with 700mb temps near 12C allowing afternoon temps
to reach 90F at KSLC and mid 90s around St George. A shortwave
trough making landfall along the Pacific Northwest coast will lift
through the northern Rockies tonight through early Thursday,
allowing for slight cooling across northern Utah but otherwise
little to no discernible impact on the forecast area. This slight
cooling will likely keep KSLC just shy of the daily record of 90F
Thursday afternoon.

.LONG TERM (After 12Z/6AM Friday)...Mid level ridging will
maintain a warm and dry airmass across the region through the
upcoming weekend, with max temps running 10-15F above climo. KSLC
will challenge the daily record of 91 both Saturday and Sunday.
An upper trough traversing the northern Rockies late in the
weekend will push a dry frontal boundary through northern Utah,
resulting in a cooling trend of roughly 5F from Sunday to Monday,
while little change in max temperature is noted across the south.
Despite this cooling, max temps will continue to run nearly 10F
above climo.

&&

.AVIATION...KSLC...West-northwest winds will persist through 02Z
before switching back to southeasterly around 03Z. There is a 20%
chance southerly winds redevelop across the airfield during the
afternoon hours. VFR conditions will prevail through the TAF
period.

.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Mainly clear skies will be
the rule across most of Utah and southwest Wyoming today with
terrain driven, diurnal winds.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...The region will remain under the influence of a
broad area of high pressure through the upcoming weekend. This
will result in daytime temperatures 10 to 15 degrees above normal,
while RH falls into the teens each afternoon. With this warm and
dry airmass in place overnight RH recovery will remain marginal.
Winds will generally remain terrain driven across most areas each
day. A slight cooling trend is expected early next week, however
no precipitation is expected through at least the next 7 days.

.SLC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
UT...None.
WY...None.
