Track length and wind speed was updated for tornado #1. We continue to consult experts on wind speeds estimates for collapsed electric transmission towers. Track length was updated based on drone video for tornado #2. Information was added for a fourth tornado southeast of Mound City, SD. The following report is preliminary information from the damage survey. Additional reports/accounts are being investigated. .Campbell Tornado #1... Rating: EF2 Estimated Peak Wind: 120 mph Path Length /statute/: 2.44 miles Path Width /maximum/: 150 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 08/28/2024 Start Time: 07:50 PM CDT Start Location: 8 WSW Mound City / Campbell County / SD Start Lat/Lon: 45.6753 / -100.2365 End Date: 08/28/2024 End Time: 08:10 PM CDT End Location: 7 SW Mound City / Campbell County / SD End Lat/Lon: 45.6612 / -100.1919 Survey Summary: The tornado touched down on the west side of SDHWY 1804 and crossed the road into a soybean field just east of SDHWY 1804 and north of 119th St. As it tracked east it toppled three electrical transmission towers. The tornado skipped along in an east- southeast direction, encountering a farmstead 0.5 miles east on 119th St. At this location multiple trees were broken, snapped and uprooted. One small shed was lifted, another shed the walls collapsed and a machine shed had the doors blown out. The main house lost windows. A tractor lost doors facing east and west but the front and back windshields were intact. Additionally, a trailer was rolled on the road and other small farm implements were destroyed or moved. Hay bales were tossed and the last sign of a track was noted in a corn field just south of the intersection of 119th St and 300th Ave. Times are subject to radar and video review and track is preliminary pending drone footage. .Campbell Tornado #2... A tree was uprooted, silo dented, two shop buildings lost roof panels and doors. Additionally, a house trailer was rolled 100 feet across 119th St, with debris tossed into a corn field.
