Weather Summary for Iowa
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
306 AM CDT Sat Sep 21 2024

Today:

Quiet conditions have held a firm grip over the state for much of
the overnight hours under mostly clear skies. Temperatures remain
mild in the 60s to low 70s, which is 5 to 10 degrees or more above
average lows for this time of year.

The calm conditions will not last long with showers and storms
expected over the state today. Isolated to scattered activity is
likely early in the day, followed by more widespread thunderstorm
development along a sagging cold front by late this afternoon and
evening. A few storms could be strong to capable, capable of
producing hail and gusty winds.

Tonight and Beyond:

Showers and storms continue tonight and into Sunday, especially over
the central and southern tiers of the state. Temperatures will also
cool off considerably with highs Sunday only in the 60s. Some shower
activity may linger into Monday, but the forecast dries out for the
remainder of the week. Temperatures gradually rebound a bit with
highs back into the low to mid 70s by mid-week, which is near our
current average as we turn the page into the fall season.
