...FLOOD ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 830 AM EDT THIS MORNING...

* WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues.

* WHERE...Mecklenburg County, North Carolina

* WHEN...Until 830 AM EDT Tuesday.

* IMPACTS...Nuisance flooding of low-lying areas adjacent to streams
  and other poor-drainage areas, including farmland, parks,
  greenways, boat-access areas, golf courses, underpasses, and
  parking lots. Isolated, shallow flows over roadways is possible.
  A few flood-prone, low-water crossings may become impassible.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
  - At 1248 AM EDT, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges
    indicate that the heaviest rain bands from a weak coastal low
    have moved well to the west of Mecklenburg County.
    Widespread 2-3" accumulations occurred across the county in
    about 6 hours, resulting in excessive runoff and rapid rises
    on area streams. Several flood-prone headwaters exceeded
    Action Stage, resulting in nuisance flooding of adjacent low-
    lying areas. Streamgauges indicate these headwater locations
    have crested and receded back below bankfull levels, but the
    floodwaves are moving downstream, resulting in continued
    downstream rises. Isolated areas of nuisance flooding will
    therefore continue, primarily along area greenways and within
    parks, for the next 1-2 hours. Therefore, the Flood Advisory
    will remain in effect for a bit longer to allow downstream
    locations to crest and residual flood conditions to improve.

    Confidence is increasing that the heavy rain threat from this
    low-pressure system is over. However, a Flood Watch will
    remain in effect for the next few hours to ensure that
    anticipated bands of moderate rain develop north of
    Mecklenburg County. Due to saturated soils and elevated
    stream levels, any additional bands of moderate to heavy rain
    will cause new areas of flooding to develop.

  - Some locations that may continue to experience nuisance
    flooding include...
    Uptown Charlotte, Huntersville, Central Charlotte, South
    Charlotte, Northeast Charlotte, East Charlotte, Southwest
    Charlotte, Northwest Charlotte, Matthews, Cornelius, Mint
    Hill, Davidson, Pineville, Marvin, The Plaza, Hidden Valley
    and Freedom Park.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Keep children away from storm drains, culverts, creeks and streams.
Water levels can rise rapidly and sweep children away.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.

Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads.

Stay away or be swept away. River banks and culverts can become
unstable and unsafe.
