...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 1926, the temperature at Yellowstone National Park
plunged to 9 degrees below zero.  It was the coldest
reading on record in the month of September for the 48
contiguous United States.  In 1989, record cold spread
from the Rockies to the Appalachians as 47 cities set
record low temperatures for the date.  Lows of 34 degrees
at Jackson Kentucky, 36 degrees at Midland Texas, and 38
in Abilene Texas, were all record lows for each of these
cities during the month of September.

In 1972, lightning struck and killed a man in Waldport
Oregon when he was carrying 35 sticks of dynamite.
