Fire Weather Planning Forecast For Southwestern California
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
1125 AM PDT Mon Jun 17 2024

......RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM PDT TUESDAY FOR GUSTY NORTHWEST
TO NORTHEAST WINDS AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY FOR THE INTERSTATE 5 CORRIDOR
AND VENTURA COUNTY MOUNTAINS...

...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT UNTIL 6 PM PDT TUESDAY
FOR GUSTY NORTH TO NORTHEAST WINDS AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY FOR THE WESTERN
SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS...

...ELEVATED TO BRIEF CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS THROUGH TUESDAY
FOR REMAINING INTERIOR AREAS AND SOUTHERN SANTA BARBARA COUNTY DUE TO
GUSTY WINDS WITH WARM AND DRY CONDITIONS...

.DISCUSSION...
Strong northwest to north winds will remain widespread across interior
Southwest California through this evening. Winds will shift to the north
and northeast overnight into Tuesday morning, ushering in much drier
air. For today and tonight, many interior areas and southwest Santa
Barbara county will see wind gusts between 30 and 50 mph, with isolated
gusts as high as 60 mph tonight across the favored ridgetops in the
I-5 corridor. When the winds shift to the northeast late tonight into
Tuesday morning, wind gusts between 35 and 45 mph will be common across
the mountains of eastern Ventura county and Los Angeles county, including
the Post Fire. Locally higher gusts up to 55 mph can be expected for
the western San Gabriels during this time. Minimum humidities today
are expected to generally range between 15 and 25 percent across the
interior (including the Post Fire), but are expected to fall to between
5 and 10 percent across many interior areas on Tuesday. With the influx
of north to northeast winds and lower humidities, the Red Flag Warning
has been extended until 6 pm Tuesday for the Interstate 5 corridor
and Ventura County mountains. In addition, the Red Flag Warning has
been extended to include the western San Gabriel mountains, valid
from midnight tonight through 6 pm Tuesday. Remaining interior areas
and southwest Santa Barbara county will see elevated to brief critical
fire weather conditions through Tuesday.

A strong catalina eddy circulation has brought extensive marine
layer clouds across the LA basin today. The northeast winds will likely
scour out some of the marine layer influence, mainly over typical
offshore wind prone areas such as the Santa Clarita Valley, eastern
Ventura county valleys, and possibly the western Santa Monica mountains.
Areas that do see the northeast winds briefly surface on Tuesday morning
will likely see a rapid drop of humidities into single digits, potentially
bringing brief critical fire weather conditions. There is an increased risk
for fast-growing grass fires over much of the area, that could transition
into wildfires where the fuel beds are most abundant and dry. There
will be a return of stronger onshore flow on Wednesday and Thursday, but warm
and dry conditions will remain across the interior.
