391 FXZS60 NSTU 200058 AFDPPG Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pago Pago AS 158 PM SST Thu Sep 19 2024 .Short term... A trough to the north and frontal boundary to the south of the Islands will bring the potential for showers tonight through Friday. A slightly unstable and moist trend via the latest upper air sounding reflects the influence of the two features. However, model data depicts the front weakening through Friday as the high pressure mentioned in previous forecasts continues to build in the area. Hence, a moderate east breeze and scattered showers will remain through Friday. .Long term... The aforementioned trough to the north may bring an uptick in showers Saturday through Sunday as it edges towards the territory. Expect numerous showers for this time, while east winds of 10 to 20 mph are forecast to continue through Monday. By Tuesday, another strong high pressure system will build near New Zealand and extend over the Samoa Island chain through the end of the forecast period. This feature will shift winds from east to southeast Tuesday through Thursday. && .Marine... A high surf advisory is cancelled as surfs have fallen below 10 feet. However, latest surface observations reported white caps over open waters with winds near 20 knots just south of the territory. These observations suggests rough ocean conditions, which warrants a small craft advisory. If winds remain in the 15 to 20 knot range through the new week, expect the advisory to hold until then. By Monday, a southwest swell will move in the area and elevate surfs along the south and west facing shores. Additionally, strong rip currents will remain until these swells subside in the area Wednesday. && .PPG WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... Small Craft Advisory && $$ TM
