Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT
243 PM MDT Mon Sep 23 2024

.SYNOPSIS...High pressure will bring above normal temperatures,
relatively light winds, and very low precipitation chances to the
Great Basin through at least the next week.

&&

.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z/6AM Thursday)...High pressure begins
building today over the Great Basin. Temperatures will increase
Tuesday and Wednesday and will be close to daily record highs by
Wednesday. High temperatures on Wednesday will be aided by a slight
increase in southwesterly winds ahead of an upper-level trough
moving into the Pacific Northwest. This trough will lift northeast
into Canada on Thursday with no other impacts in Utah and southwest
Wyoming.

.LONG TERM (After 12Z/6AM Thursday)...Temperatures will remain
above normal from Thursday until at least Sunday, with valley
temperatures in the upper 80s and 90s region-wide, as high pressure
remains dominant over the Great Basin. Sunday is the latest day that
90F has been recorded in Salt Lake City (in 1957 and 2011) and there
is currently a 25% chance we get to 90F on that day. Beyond Sunday,
ensemble forecasts indicate that it is very likely (80% chance) that
the unusually dry, warm and low wind conditions of this week will
persist through at least Thursday 10/3.

&&

.AVIATION...KSLC...VFR conditions will prevail throughout the
period. Northwesterly winds will persist through 03Z before
switching back to the southeast.

.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Mainly clear skies will be the
rule across most of Utah and southwest Wyoming through tonight.
Northern Utah may see a bit of a northerly gradient through this
evening, otherwise terrain driven winds can be expected through
the TAF period.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...High pressure along the Pacific Coast is
maintaining a dry and mild northwesterly flow across the Great
Basin this afternoon. This high will move overhead Tuesday,
bringing a slight warming trend, along with light, terrain driven
winds. As the high moves east Wednesday, southwesterly flow will
bring a more substantial warming and drying trend Wednesday with
temperatures nearly 10 degrees above normal across the area, and
daytime RH falling below 15% across most valleys and diminished
overnight RH recovery. This warm and dry airmass will remain in
place through the upcoming weekend, with no chance for rain over
the next 7 days.
