692 FNUS56 KLOX 181659 FWFLOX Fire Weather Planning Forecast For Southwestern California National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA 959 AM PDT Tue Jun 18 2024 ......RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM PDT TUESDAY FOR GUSTY NORTHWEST TO NORTHEAST WINDS AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY FOR THE INTERSTATE 5 CORRIDOR AND VENTURA COUNTY MOUNTAINS... ...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT UNTIL 6 PM PDT TUESDAY FOR GUSTY NORTH TO NORTHEAST WINDS AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY FOR THE WESTERN SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS... ...ELEVATED TO BRIEF CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS THROUGH TUESDAY FOR REMAINING INTERIOR AREAS AND SOUTHERN SANTA BARBARA COUNTY DUE TO GUSTY WINDS WITH WARM AND DRY CONDITIONS... .DISCUSSION... The current Red Flag Warnings for the I-5 Corridor, Ventura County Mountains, and Western San Gabriel Mountains look on track for today. However, these may need to be extended to midnight tonight as winds shift back to the north, with speeds in the 15-30 mph range. Relative humidities will be near 15%, but should increase higher after midnight. East to northeast winds have developed this morning, but have been limited to interior areas, especially along the I-14 Corridor where gusts 20 to 30 mph common. These winds extend through the interior Santa Barbara County mountains into San Luis Obispo County. Winds should trend lighter through the day, but relative humidities are expected to fall to 5 to 10% over the deserts and interior valleys. The ongoing strong catalina eddy circulation has again brought extensive marine layer clouds across the LA basin and the Ventura coast today, and has helped bring high humidities into the eastern Ventura Valleys and the coastal LA Valleys. There may be a rapid drop of humidities into single digits for the Santa Clarita Valley, potentially bringing brief critical fire weather conditions. There is an increased risk for fast-growing grass fires over much of the area, espeically in the Red Flag Warning, that could transition into wildfires where the fuel beds are most abundant and dry. Conditions will improve over the area Wednesday as minimum humidities trend higher with the return of onshore flow, however warm and dry conditions remain over the interior. Some isolated pockets of single digit humidities are possible on Wednesday, but winds over these spots should be light. The main area of wind activity Wednesday into Friday will be western portions of the Santa Barbara south coast where Sundowner winds will reoccur each night. With minimum relative humidities of 20-30%, isolated 18% and gusts near 45-50 mph to tonight, elevated fire weather conditions are expected. Humidity trends higher through the week for this area. The next time of concern to monitor will be the weekend when temperatures increase again, especially Saturday when onshore winds ramp up over the hot, dry interior. There is also potential for another offshore wind event late next week.
