.DISCUSSION...
Strong wind remains the main fire weather forecast concern this
afternoon, with the main impact areas being west of the James River.
Wind observations so far today have shown peak gusts of 40+ miles
per hour over parts of central and north central South Dakota, with
broad coverage of 30 miles per hour or greater over the entire
forecast area. These winds will help bring additional moisture into
the region, bringing dew points into the upper 40s to low 50s where
winds are strongest. As a result, afternoon humidity today will
remain high enough to where Red Flag conditions are not met, ranging
from 35 to 50 percent across the forecast area. Strongest winds
shift east Thursday, and 30 to 35 mile per hour gusts are expected
over northeastern South Dakota into western Minnesota. Winds
continue to increase the dew points, so afternoon humidity once
again only drops to about 40 percent at the lowest despite a slight
increase in temperatures. Winds will begin to decrease Thursday
afternoon into Thursday evening with the passage of a dry cold
front.
