.DISCUSSION...
Out ahead of a cold front this morning, rain showers and weak
thunderstorms will spread over most of the area. Through this
afternoon, much of the forecast area will see at least half an inch
of rain, with parts of northeastern South Dakota and western
Minnesota potentially seeing an inch of rain. Thunderstorms that do
develop are expected to remain weak, with the main fire weather
threat being cloud to ground lightning. Southerly wind this morning
will also increase, gusting up to 40 miles per hour over
northeastern South Dakota and western Minnesota after sunrise today.
As the front passes through this afternoon and evening, wind will
turn to become northwesterly. Gusts will increase over north central
South Dakota, reaching 45 to 55 miles per hour through the evening
into overnight Monday (prompting a Wind Advisory for that area).
Central South Dakota may see gusts of 40 miles per hour during the
evening. The strong winds combine with afternoon humidity below 40
percent to push Grassland Fire Danger to Very High over Corson,
Dewey, Stanley, and Jones Counties and to the High category for
counties directly east of those mentioned. An increase in humidity
will limit fire weather concerns further east.
