Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Aberdeen SD
1251 PM CDT Mon Aug 17 2026

.DISCUSSION...

A weak front is moving through the area very slowly, with southwest
winds of 15 to 25 mph east of the James valley becoming west to
northwest at 10 to 20 mph after the front moves through. During the
heat of the afternoon along and east of the front we could see
isolated to scattered storms with the risk of hail and strong winds.

Scattered storms will push in from the west late this evening and
overnight with the additional potential for hail and strong winds.

High pressure builds into the region for Tuesday. Temperatures will
top out around 80 with afternoon humidity down to around 40 to 60
percent. Winds will be out of the north to northwest at 10 to 20
mph.

...MODERATE FIRE DANGER...

Marginal weather conditions or lowering moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that there is
some potential for a fire to spread. Any outdoor burning should be
closely monitored.

The outlook for Tuesday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the low category.

...LOW FIRE DANGER...

Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that the
probability of a fast moving fire is low. Outdoor burning under
these conditions can usually be performed with reasonable safety
precautions, but should be monitored.

The outlook for Tuesday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the low category.
