A warmer air mass moves into the area today with temperatures warming into the 70s to low 80s across central and northeast South Dakota. A clipper system will move through the area this afternoon through tonight. A few showers and thunderstorms will be possible but the larger concern will be the strong northwest winds that develop behind a strong cold front`s passage this afternoon into this evening. Gusts will range between 45-60 mph from the Prairie Coteau of northeast South Dakota and points west. Minimum relative humidity values will range from 35 to 50 percent across central South Dakota during the afternoon, where the strongest wind gusts are expected, resulting in high to very high fire danger across portions of central and north central South Dakota today. Very poor weather conditions and very low moisture content of grasses, and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that dangerous burning conditions exist.
