.DISCUSSION...

Northwesterly winds will be decreasing through the afternoon and
will become fairly light as they begin to shift this evening to be
out of the east. Minimum relative humidity this afternoon is on
track to be between 35 to 45 percent in area west of the Missouri
River and between 40 to 50 percent to the east.

The winds will continue to shift during the overnight hours to be
out of the southeast. These winds will start to increase during the
morning into the early afternoon as the winds from a low level jet
aloft start to mix down. These winds will be the strongest west of
the James River Valley, with wind speeds between 15 to 25 mph and
gusts of 30 to 40 mph. Areas over and to the east of the James river
valley will see slightly weaker winds with gusts between 20 to 30
mph. These winds will decrease during the afternoon. While the
stronger winds increase the fire weather concerns for Wednesday,
higher humidity values at the time of the strongest winds help to
decrease the concerns slightly. The minimum relative humidity values
will be between 45 to 70 percent during the strongest winds and
through the afternoon. This leads to high to moderate grassland fire
danger over central South Dakota Wednesday, with the highest values
in areas west of the Missouri River.

...MODERATE FIRE DANGER...

Marginal weather conditions or lowering moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that there is
some potential for a fire to spread.  Any outdoor burning should be
closely monitored.


The outlook for Wednesday afternoon...The grassland fire danger
index will reach the high category.

...LOW FIRE DANGER...

Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that the
probability of a fast moving fire is low.  Outdoor burning under
these conditions can usually be performed with reasonable safety
precautions, but should be monitored.


The outlook for Wednesday afternoon...The grassland fire danger
index will reach the low to high category.
