Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Aberdeen SD
241 AM CDT Thu Aug 20 2026

.DISCUSSION...

A weak cold front will track south through the area today. There
will be a few showers and thunderstorms across northeast South
Dakota and west central Minnesota this morning. Winds will become
northwesterly by afternoon and turn gusty at times between 20-30
mph. Drier conditions will begin to settle into central parts of
South Dakota this afternoon with minimum relative humidity values
ranging between 25-30 percent along and west of the Missouri Valley.
This will drive the grassland fire danger index to high levels
across north central South Dakota.

...HIGH FIRE DANGER...

Unfavorable weather conditions and low moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that there
is high potential for a fire to spread. Outdoor burning should be
restricted to early morning or evening hours when wind speeds are
usually lower and the relative humidity is higher.

The outlook for Friday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the moderate category.

...LOW FIRE DANGER...
