Rangeland Fire Danger Statement

.DISCUSSION...

A front passing through the state has shifted winds to the northwest
in central and north central South Dakota, while southwest winds
across the northeast part of the state will be transitioning through
the afternoon. Winds are also on the increase, especially across
north central South Dakota where gusts have topped out above 40 mph.
Winds elsewhere are only expected to peak at 25 to 35 mph. Afternoon
humidity is down around 25 to 35 percent in central South Dakota
with the northeast only down around 40 to 50 percent.

Winds will weaken tonight and for Monday, will be out of the west
most of the morning, gradually shifting to southerly. Temperatures
are only expected to top low to mid 50s with afternoon humidity down
around 25 to 35 percent.

...VERY HIGH FIRE DANGER...

Very poor weather conditions and very low moisture content of
grasses, and other dry organic material on the ground,
indicate that dangerous burning conditions exist.  Fires will
spread rapidly and show erratic behavior. Outdoor burning is
not recommended.


The outlook for Monday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the moderate category.

Unfavorable weather conditions and low moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that there
is high potential for a fire to spread.  Outdoor burning should be
restricted to early morning or evening hours when wind speeds are
usually lower and the relative humidity is higher.


The outlook for Monday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the moderate category.
