Rangeland Fire Danger Statement

.DISCUSSION...

A tight pressure gradient between a surface low to the west and the
departed high pressure to the east will continue the southerly flow
into the forecast area today. Winds will be strongest over central
South Dakota, where sustained winds of 15 to 20 miles per hour and
gusts of 25 to 35 miles per hour will take hold. Winds are expected
to increase further by Tuesday afternoon, with broader coverage of
30 to 35 mile per hour gusts expected. Both the NBM as well as Hi-
res ensembles give low probability (<10%) for either sustained winds
or wind gusts reaching Wind Advisory criteria (30 miles per hour and
45 miles per hour respectively). Luckily, the increased moisture
advection into the area yesterday and through today will help keep
afternoon humidity at 30-40% at the lowest both today and Tuesday,
high enough to avoid any potential Red Flag Advisories.

...HIGH FIRE DANGER...

Unfavorable weather conditions and low moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that there
is high potential for a fire to spread. Outdoor burning should be
restricted to early morning or evening hours when wind speeds are
usually lower and the relative humidity is higher.

The outlook for Tuesday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the high category.

...LOW FIRE DANGER...

Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that the
probability of a fast moving fire is low. Outdoor burning under
these conditions can usually be performed with reasonable safety
precautions, but should be monitored.

The outlook for Tuesday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the low to moderate category.
