Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Aberdeen SD
238 AM CST Sun Nov 23 2025

.DISCUSSION...

A trough of low pressure will push across western and central South
Dakota during the day today. Dry weather will continue. While winds
will be generally less than 10 mph over central South Dakota, they
will be out of the south to southwest with gusts of 20 to 30 mph over
eastern South Dakota and west central Minnesota this afternoon. The
strongest winds will be over and just east of the Prairie Coteau.
Relative humidity values will fall to 35 to 50 percent, lowest over
the east of the Prairie Coteau and over south central South Dakota.

Increased moisture will move in Monday and remain through the rest of
the week. After light winds around 10 mph an hour Monday, they will
increase Monday night, with winds out of the northwest on Tuesday
gusting 30 to 50 mph. The strongest winds will be over central South
Dakota. Temperatures will be falling through the day Tuesday. While
there is a chance of precipitation, little to no precipitation is
expected over south central South Dakota, where some of the strongest
winds are forecast. This will result in high to potentially very high
Grassland Fire Danger Index values over portions of central South
Dakota.

...HIGH FIRE DANGER...

Unfavorable weather conditions and low moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that there
is high potential for a fire to spread. Outdoor burning should be
restricted to early morning or evening hours when wind speeds are
usually lower and the relative humidity is higher.

The outlook for Monday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the low category.

...MODERATE FIRE DANGER...

Marginal weather conditions or lowering moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that there is
some potential for a fire to spread. Any outdoor burning should be
closely monitored.

The outlook for Monday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the low to moderate category.

...LOW FIRE DANGER...

Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that the
probability of a fast moving fire is low. Outdoor burning under
these conditions can usually be performed with reasonable safety
precautions, but should be monitored.

The outlook for Monday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the low category.
