Sea Ice Forecast for Western and Arctic Alaskan Coastal Waters

ANALYSIS CONFIDENCE...High

SYNOPSIS...A low will linger over the High Arctic through the
forecast period while several disturbances move from the Bering Sea
into the Beaufort Sea.

PKZ814-Cape Halkett to Flaxman Island out to 15 nm-
PKZ859-Point Franklin to Cape Halkett from 15 to 75 nm-
PKZ860-Cape Halkett to Flaxman Island from 15 to 80 nm-
PKZ861-Flaxman Island to Demarcation Point from 15 to 75 nm-

The main ice edge in the Beaufort Sea extends from near Kaktovik to
70 26N 143 17W to 70 21N 140 38W to 69 51N 138 13W and
continues east into Canadian waters. The ice edge is open water.

From land-based points in Alaska, the main ice edge in the Beaufort
Sea extends from near Kaktovik to 20 nm north of Kaktovik to 40 nm
north of Demarcation Point to 60 nm northeast of Demarcation Point
and continues east into Canadian waters. The ice edge is open water.

FORECAST FOR THE BEAUFORT SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast
confidence is high. Easterly winds will become northwesterly on
Tuesday and then westerly from Wednesday through Thursday. Winds
shift easterly on Friday and then southerly on Saturday. Overall,
expect sea ice to continue melting and for ice free and open water
areas near the coast to continue expanding.

The main ice edge in the Chukchi Sea extends from near Oliktok Point
to 71 43N 154 53W to 72 3N 157 59W to 71 29N 157 19W to 71 9N
159 52W to 71 47N 161 15W to 71 40N 163 20W to 71 59N 167 21W
to 72 20N 170 15W and continues into Russian waters. The ice edge
is open water.

From land-based points in Alaska, the main ice edge in the Chukchi
Sea extends from near Oliktok Point to 40 nm northeast of Utqiagvik
to 50 nm northwest of Utqiagvik to 10 nm west of Utqiagvik to 30 nm
north of Wainwright to 70 nm north-northwest of Wainwright to 85 nm
northwest of Wainwright to 155 nm northwest of Wainwright to 210 nm
northwest of Wainwright and continues into Russian waters. The ice
edge is open water.

FORECAST FOR THE CHUKCHI SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast
confidence is high. Northerly winds will persist through mid-Tuesday
before shifting westerly through Wednesday. Winds then become
northeasterly from Thursday through Saturday. Expect the ice edge to
retreat and move eastward around 5-10 nm/day during periods of
westerly winds. During northeasterly winds starting Thursday, expect
the ice edge to advance to the south/southwest around 5-10 nm/day.
