Sea Ice Forecast for Western and Arctic Alaskan Coastal Waters

ANALYSIS CONFIDENCE...High.

SYNOPSIS...A low from the North Pacific will track east across the
southern Bering Sea through Saturday, then another low will track
from the North Pacific toward the southeastern Bering Sea. High
pressure will persist over the Chukchi Sea while a low moves south
across the eastern Beaufort Sea through Monday.

FORECAST FOR THE BEAUFORT SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast
confidence is high. Northeasterly to easterly winds will become
westerly as the low moves south toward Banks Island Saturday through
Monday. Expect sea ice to drift west-southwestward through Thursday
and then easterly Saturday through Monday. Sea ice near the Alaska
coastline will likely move very little overall.

FORECAST FOR THE CHUKCHI SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast
confidence is high.  Northerly to easterly winds will generally
persist through Monday. The polynya off the northwest coast of
Alaska will persist and continue to fill in with new ice and multi-
year sea ice will continue to drift west to southwest across the
Chukchi Sea. South of Point Hope, sea ice is expected to remain
fairly stationary through Monday.

The main ice edge extends from near Quinhagak to 56 42N 169 3W to
57 16N 172 26W to 60 15N 179 39W and continues into Russian
waters. The ice edge is open water.

From land-based points in Alaska, the main ice edge extends from
near Quinhagak to 20 nm northeast of Saint George to 100 nm
northwest of Saint George to 300 nm southwest of Gambell and
continues into Russian waters. The ice edge is open water.

FORECAST FOR THE BERING SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast confidence
is high. Southerly to easterly winds will persist over much of the
ice pack through Monday, though near the Bering Strait winds will
remain northerly through the forecast period. Sea ice near the
Bering Strait will continue to drift south overall, while the
southern portion of the ice pack in the Bering Sea will drift to the
northwest especially east of Saint Matthew Island and continue to
gradually melt.
