A significant long-duration bora windstorm, driven by a deep, frigid
high pressure system over the Copper River Basin and a warmer low
pressure system in the Gulf of Alaska, brought widespread power
outages to thousands of households for 24+ hours and damage across
the Matanuska Valley from late Friday, December 5 through the morning
of Tuesday, December 9. There were many reports of hurricane-force
wind gusts ripping roofing and siding off of houses and shattering
windows. These winds also downed numerous trees and power lines,
damaged fences and vehicles (including cars, small airplanes, and
recreational vehicles), and moved or damaged sheds and other large
objects. Travel was also impacted by power outages affecting
traffic signals, ripped-off railroad crossing bars, and scattered
debris on area roadways; while many businesses were closed due to
power outages and building damage.
