            As a 30-mile run of thick, bank-to-bank ice
            pushed toward the coast, Kwiguk Pass jammed
            heavily at its mouth, backing floodwaters
            directly into the village. The river stage
            surged to 9.7 feet (approaching the historic
            11.5-foot record), leaving all roads to the
            local airport impassable by vehicles. The
            Emmonak High School had to be opened as an
            emergency shelter for displaced residents.
