.DISCUSSION...
As of Friday 0600 AKDT Sitka is in the calm before our next
storm; light rain showers with winds at or below 10 knots. Seas
along the coast are west southwest and below 5 ft. Impressively
low for October 2. Friday will be the best lower impact day: light
rain, light southerly wind, low sea state. Conditions worsen
Saturday.
This SPOT will be broken into two parts for SAR: Marine and land
based. While focused for Friday, incoming weather over the weekend
needs to be mentioned.
Marine Environment:
Friday will be the best day in the Sound. Buoy 84 is reporting
WSW seas 5 ft at 8 seconds, with some underlying swell from the
central and southern Pacific. Main focus is conditions worsening
through the day Saturday. Anticipate southeasterly winds to build
through Saturday, reaching 10 to 15 knots by Saturday afternoon
flowing out of Deep Inlet and Silver bay. Winds reach peak
intensity of 20 to 30 knots in the Sound overnight Saturday,
diminishing back to 15 knots Sunday. Fresh southwest seas of 6 ft
in the central sound are expected by 1pm to 3pm Saturday, building
to 10 to 12 ft by 4am Sunday. Expect heavy rain with temperatures
holding near 50F.
Land Based:
Winds at sea level hold true from what is mentioned in the marine
environment above. Winds will likely be a bit less in the lower
elevation areas near the city. If you are moving up to exposed
ridges in the mountains, expect 35 to 45 knot winds with heavy
rain. Temperatures will be near 50F at sea level, dropping to near
40F in the mountains.
