...A WETTER, GENERALLY SLIGHTLY COOLER THAN NORMAL, AND MORE ACTIVE
MAY FOR SOUTHEAST ALASKA...

A series of frontal systems that moved through the area from the
southwest and post-frontal onshore-flow shower activity brought
plenty of rainfall, cloud-cover, and marginally cooler temperatures
to Southeast Alaska for the month of May, overall. There were a few
breaks during the month with warmer, drier, and sunnier weather, but
not enough to compensate for the generally active weather pattern.

As for broken or ties records, Sitka Airport broke their old record
high temperature of 66 degrees with 71 degrees on May 3rd. The old
record was set in 2014. On that same day, Juneau Airport set a new
record high temperature of 69 degrees. That broke their old record
of 65 degrees, which was set back in 1997. On May 9th, Juneau
Airport broke their old 24-hour rainfall record of 0.66 inches with
1.64 inches. The old record was set back in 1976. On that same day,
Sitka Airport set a new 24-hour rainfall record of 1.57 inches,
which broke their old record of 0.98 inches, which was set back in
1964. During a clear, dry, and calm night that allowed for good
radiational cooling on May 21st, Sitka Airport tied their record low
temperature of 37 degrees, which was originally set back in 1980.
Finally, on the last day of the month, a strong frontal system
pushed through with a healthy plume of moisture associated with it,
which caused widespread moderate to heavy rainfall for the day for
the Southern Panhandle. This caused Ketchikan Airport to break their
old 24-hour rainfall record of 3.21 inches, which was set back in
1970. The new record is 3.56 inches.
