First concern is for thunderstorms this afternoon. Morning stratus
has kept the boundary layer cool. However, we are now near full
sunshine and warming, so if we hit upper 70s (which we should do)
the cap would be broken. That`s not a guarantee of course,
depending on how clouds evolve, but there is also synoptic lift so
that should add to coverage. As a result, we`ll use TEMPO TSRA
for the most likely time period 21Z-01Z. Just like yesterday, if a
storm core moves over the airport, then visibility could drop to
<1SM in +TSRA.
Next concern will be for patchy fog and areas of stratus again
overnight given moist boundary layer and expected rainfall. While
there`s some threat as soon as skies clear after midnight, the
main threat would be 11Z-15Z. Winds appear to be slightly less
favorable than last night, but so light that patchy fog could
essentially develop anywhere. And, enough threat of a weak wind
shift to NW late that fog could easily spread back to KDEN so
we`ll go with TEMPO BR and LIFR ceiling.
Any fog/stratus is expected to lift a little quicker Thursday
morning since it will be shallow. Another round of scattered
storms expected Thursday afternoon mainly after 21Z.

VFR conditions expected through the afternoon and evening with
TSRA developing over the mountains and valleys around noon and
spreading off into the adjacent plains during the afternoon and
evening. Have included an Prob30 for all three TAF sites with
the earliest start time at KALS at 18z, and a bit latter 20-22z
at KCOS and KPUB. Brief MVFR cigs/vis will be possible under
the stronger storms with +TSRA along with gusty erratic outflow
winds up to 40 kts. Activity should pull east of the terminals
during the late evening with VFR cloudiness persisting
overnight. If rain occurs at the terminals some patchy ground
fog will be possible. Given the light drainage winds at all
three terminals did not include fog in the TAFs at this point as
odds look too low. Another round of thunderstorms will be
possible Thursday afternoon. -KT

A band of stratiform rain showers continues to push across the
region at the start of the period, as of 18Z, located along a line
from KJAC to KCPR. As it crosses the Owl Creek and Bridger
Mountains, it is expected to start to break up a bit, however rain
showers at KCOD and KWRL are expected during the afternoon as the
band moves through. Some isolated low clouds across the Wind River
Basin (including at KRIW and KLND) have been observed behind the
line of showers but are expected to break up into the early
afternoon. Some clearing west of the Divide has already begun, which
will prompt convective development during the afternoon. PROB30
groups have been included for KBPI, KPNA, and KRKS for this
convection.
Overnight, low clouds and perhaps even fog are expected to develop
at several terminals (10 to 30% chances) with greatest chances at
KBPI, KPNA, KJAC, and KCPR. There is not enough confidence to drop
cigs or vsby in the TAFs below MVFR at this time, but if fog
develops (10 to 15% chance), expect to see IFR to LIFR conditions
through much of Thursday morning (10Z through 16Z timeframe). By
late morning, more significant clearing is expected ahead of the
next shortwave.

Scattered to widespread showers are expected across the Wyoming
terminals. Due to the weak nature of the showers its a little
uncertain as to whether the showers will move into the Nebraska
Panhandle. The ceilings will fluctuate between scattered,
broken, and overcast throughout the day. This makes forecasted
VFR to MVFR conditions difficult but assume the cloud may turn
overcast at the reported altitude later in the day especially
for our Wyoming terminals.

MVFR conditions are expected to continue across southwest Nebraska
and the Sandhills this afternoon, as a deck of stratus remains
across the region. May begin to see some return to VFR this evening
for a few hours, before conditions rapidly drop into IFR and LIFR
conditions overnight. However, across north central Nebraska, VFR
conditions are expected to prevail, as the region stays just north
of the lower stratus ceilings. Showers and thunderstorms may track
across southwest Nebraska tonight, bringing another shot of moisture
to the area. Confidence is low in showers at KLBF, so have kept
mention out of the overnight period. However, the recent moisture
and light winds overnight may bring fog development across southwest
and south central Nebraska. Fog in combination with low ceilings
brings LIFR potential overnight, with a return to MVFR by mid
morning, as fog dissipates.

central CO tracks southeastward into southeast CO. IFR ceilings
will gradually lift/improve to MVFR by early afternoon. Further
improvement to VFR is expected during the mid-late afternoon,
though.. intermittent or occasional MVFR ceilings are a
possibility. Ceilings are expected to deteriorate to MVFR-IFR
late this evening (after sunset).. with further deterioration to
IFR or LIFR likely overnight. Substantial improvement may not
occur until the end of the 18Z TAF period (late Thursday
morning). Showers and thunderstorms could potentially impact the
Goodland terminal this evening.. mainly ~03-07Z.. when
convection may (1) approach from the west and/or (2) develop
directly over northwest KS. Gusty/erratic surface winds can be
expected in vicinity of any storms.
MCK: Light (5-10 knot) southerly to easterly winds will prevail
through the majority of the TAF period.. perhaps becoming
variable, at times. MVFR ceilings should gradually lift/improve
to MVFR by early afternoon. Further improvement to VFR is
expected during the mid-late afternoon, though.. intermittent

IFR conditions in the Hays area will slowly improve into the
MVFR conditions after 00Z Thursday. Elsewhere low ceilings
between 1500 and 3000 feet AGL will give way to VFR conditions
through 21Z today. These improving conditions late today and
early tonight will quickly deteriorate as thunderstorm chances
increase across southwest Kansas after 02Z Thursday. A cluster
of thunderstorms is expected to cross western Kansas between 03z
and 12z Thursday and as these storms pass ceilings will fall
below 500 feet AGL and southerly winds will shift to the north.
Areas of fog cannot be ruled out late tonight and early Thursday
morning. The HREF and LAMP models suggest a 40 to 60 percent
chance for visibilities to fall below 2 miles at times between
09Z and 15Z Sunday.

An active weather pattern continues to impact the panhandles and
all the terminals for the next several days. For today the low
level cloud deck is burning off which will see the terminals
improve to VFR conditions during this afternoon. The VFR
conditions then have a high chance of remaining so as low level
dry moves into the panhandles. There is an exception with a low to
moderate chance for rain showers and thunderstorms in the northern
panhandles this evening into the overnight. These could cause
brief reductions to MVFR conditions at KGUY if the pass over the
airfield. The chances of these impacting KDHT are to low to be
reflected within the current TAFs. Then for Thursday there is a
further low chance for rain showers and thunderstorms that can
also reduce conditions to MVFR if they impact any of the
terminals. Currently the chances of this occurring are to low to
be reflected within any of the TAFs. The winds today will remain
southerly and gusty through the afternoon into the evening. For
Thursday the winds will initially be southerly but will shift to
the north following the passage of a cold front. This front will
move N to S over the panhandles during the morning hours impacting
KGUY then KDHT and lastly KAMA.

MVFR cigs linger in a few areas, but low clouds should clear out
by 19Z at the latest. Showers have already begun to develop over
the western high terrain and will continue to expand in coverage
eastward through the afternoon. Storm intensity will be lower than
previous days, but gusty and erratic winds will still be a
concern at all terminals. Precipitation will be very short-lived,
but PROB30 groups were included at most terminals due to the
threat of gusty outflow winds.
