.DISCUSSION...

Today through Friday...

The upper trough that brought a winter wonderland to the region
continues to move into the upper midwest. Lingering shortwave
energy within a northwest flow regime will allow for light snow
showers to persist through the morning hours in eastern MT. The
Winter Weather Advisories for Wheatland, Park, and Sweet Grass
counties have been cancelled, with hazardous impacts no longer
occuring, although roads may continue to be slick through sunrise.
The rest of the advisories remain in place this morning, with
lingering showers and blowing snow causing reductions to
visibility. Additional accumulations up to an inch are possible
within the remaining highlights.

Temperatures in the single digits to teens have been observed so
far this morning. The snowpack and decreasing cloud cover will
accentuate apparent temperatures in the locations where snow has
stopped falling (e.g. Livingston, Big Timber, and Harlowton).

High temperatures today and Sunday will be in the teens and 20sF.
Temperatures in the single digits above and below zero are
forecast tonight, with the coldest temperatures in the east.
Another upper low and trough will drop through the mountain west
late Saturday into Sunday. This system is not expected to have any
impacts to southeast MT and northern WY, aside from a light snow
shower or two in the Absaroka/Beartooths on Sunday. Increasing
cloud cover with this system over the southwest zones may prevent
temperatures from dropping below zero into Sunday morning.

Northwest flow prevails Monday, before a potential Klondike
Chinook impacts the region on Tuesday. A strengthening pressure
gradient across the western foothills will bring gusty winds to
the gap locations, Monday night into Tuesday. Local wind guidance
and tools are struggling to realize the Chinook, with a moderate
chance for wind gusts greater than 50+ mph. An upper trough will
follow the Chinook, bringing an increased chance of rain/snow
showers. Confidence in precipitation is moderate to high, while
confidence in total amounts is low to moderate. Blowing snow may
be a concern with this system, will continue to monitor this
going forward.

The GEFS and ECMWF ensemble have come into better agreement on
the progression of the upper trough. The general consensus is
that the bulk of the trough energy will split and dive southwest
through California, Wednesday and Thursday. The magnitude of the
remaining trough over the region becomes uncertain, with the EC
depicting more upper level energy coming through the Northern
Rockies than the GEFS. For now, the current forecast has high
temperatures in the 30s to 40F for Tuesday and Thursday, and
20s/30s on Wednesday.

.AVIATION...

The snow and breezy conditions will gradually taper off from west
to east this morning, likely coming to an end by 19z. With this,
conditions will improve and cloud cover will decrease for many
locations. However, over far eastern Montana (around KBHK and
K97M), scattered to broken low clouds look to linger into tonight
before clearing Sunday. With this, MVFR to IFR conditions may
persist where the cloud cover holds on. Otherwise, look for VFR
conditions to return to the rest of the area today. Arends
