.DISCUSSION...
Tonight through Sunday...
Latest satellite imagery shows a broad low amplitude upper ridge
across the Rockies with anti-cyclonic flow over our forecast area
providing quiet mild weather.
Ensembles and cluster analysis are in good agreement for the week
ahead, showing a fairly progressive pattern of short waves moving
across the region. The first short wave arrives Tuesday, with the
best chance of precip (30-50%) limited to the western mountains
and foothills while downslope flow limits measurable precip over
the plains with less than 15% chance of more than 0.1" of rain
outside of the mountains. Above 8,500 ft in the Absaroka/Beartooth
mountains, there is a 50% chance of at least a couple inches of
snow mainly on west facing slopes.
The upper ridge bounces back quickly for Wednesday keeping
conditions dry and mild before upper flow backs to the southwest
ahead of next trough set to track over our region late Wed night
through Thursday. This poorly organized system will again
primarily affect west facing aspects of the high country as
downslope prevails over the plains limiting precip to scattered
light showers. However, this system has potential to produce brisk
winds across most areas (gusts 25-40 mph), and could result in
westerly gusts over 50 mph (70% chance) along the US-191 corridor
from Big Timber to Harlowton. The I-90 corridor in the Livingston
vicinity may also see southwest cross winds gust over 50 mph (80%
chance) late Wed into Thursday. Snow levels will fall a little
lower, to around 7,000 ft by Thursday morning, but accumulations
will still be light. Currently, there remains a 40% chance for at
least a couple inches of snow above 8,000 ft.
Late Friday into Saturday, the best chance for more widespread
precip arrives, although totals still remain light. Currently,
there is a 10-30% chance of at least 0.1" outside of the
mountains, a 40% chance over the Bighorn mountains, and a 50%
chance of a few inches of snow above 7,000 ft in the
Absaroka/Beartooth mountains. Breezy conditions will also
accompany this system, with widespread gusts currently expected
around 25-40 mph.
Despite an active pattern, temps will remain seasonally mild
through the work week with highs in the 50s to lower 60s, and
lows in the 30s to around 40 degrees. Temperatures then trend
cooler into the weekend, with highs expected in the mid 40s to
lower 50s. BT
.AVIATION...
Expect VFR conditions through the forecast period. Easterly winds
will continue over most of the area through this evening, before
shifting to the southwest. SW winds will begin increasing at KLVM
tonight ahead of an approaching disturbance, with gusts between
25-35 knots. Matos
