Day 3-8 Fire Weather Outlook
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0415 PM CDT Thu Aug 28 2025

Valid 301200Z - 051200Z

A closed upper low will approach the Pacific Northwest coast, but it
may not fully move onshore this weekend before retrograding back
into the Pacific by early next week. An upper-level ridge will begin
to build over much of the West and eventually extend into British
Columbia by early next week. Upper-level ridging is likely to
persist into late next week over the West, with a thermal trough
likely strengthening on the West Coast. Upper-level troughing will
likely continue over the eastern US, with a deep upper-level trough
forecast to develop over the region mid to late next week and cold
fronts pushing up against the eastern slopes of the Rockies.

Dry/breezy conditions remain possible in portions of northern
California, the Inland Northwest, and the northwest Great Basin Day
3/Saturday - Day 5/Monday depending how far east/south the upper low
moves into the Pacific Northwest this weekend. Additionally,
isolated showers and perhaps sporadic lightning are possible in
western Washington associated with the upper low during the same
time period.

Drier air will continue to filter into the West through the weekend
with monsoonal moisture/thunderstorms likely confined to eastern
Arizona, New Mexico, and southern Colorado Day 3/Saturday- Day
5/Monday. Moisture is likely to start slowly moving back west and
north into southeast California and broader Four Corners region by
mid next week. Hot, dry, and unstable conditions will emerge across
much of California, the Northwest, and the western/northern Great
Basin next week. There remains concern for holdovers and ongoing
large wildfires as burn periods will increase across these areas.
Some forecast guidance indicates the potential for a weak low or
mid-level trough near the California coast early to mid-next week.
If this develops, lightning potential will have to be monitored for
portions of northern California/vicinity.
