Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac MI
633 PM EDT Sat Aug 2 2025

.KEY MESSAGES...

- Surface-level Canadian wildfire smoke persists this evening
through Sunday.

- Mostly dry conditions with a gradual warm up in temperatures
toward normal by early next week.

&&

.AVIATION...

Expansion of Canadian wildfire smoke across the southeast Michigan
airspace tonight will contribute to some hazy conditions. Upstream
observational trends suggest a modest dip in visibility toward 5-6
miles remains possible at times. These conditions are likely to
persist into Sunday. Otherwise, continued dry and stable conditions
governed by prevailing high pressure ensures limited cloud
development and light winds with some variability.

For DTW/D21 Convection...No thunderstorms will occur through the
duration of the TAF period.

THRESHOLD PROBABILITIES...

* None.

DISCUSSION...

Extended stretch of dry weather continues for SE Michigan through
early next week. Current governing feature is a 1030 mb surface high,
centered over Wisconsin, which has supported clear skies albeit
under a veil of Canadian wildfire smoke. Very dry conditions are
observed both at the surface and through the column with surface
dewpoints in the mid 40s and observed PW of 0.52" per the 12z KDTX
RAOB.

The high has been strengthening underneath the western/convergent
flank of upper level troughing, but as the height field flattens out
tonight-tomorrow the surface high weakens. A second Canadian high
pressure system however quickly fills in across Ontario to reinforce
dry conditions, while pushing the thermal trough off to the east.
Gradual airmass modification affords a couple degree boost in high
temperatures each day to bring daytime highs into the low to mid 80s
to start the work week. Ensemble members remain lean on precipitation
chances through at least middle of next week.

MARINE...

Quiet weather will continue through the weekend and into the
beginning of next week as high pressure centers itself over the
region. Winds today will be westerly at less than 10 knots, before
becoming light and variable on Sunday.
